C. Bruce's Story

I was lucky....I was on the staff at Midview H.S. from 1962-65 as Senior Choir Director. What a wonderful time....great kids, great staff and administration(Bruce Cox, principal and then Dick Van ?) Glenn Dennis was the Superintendent....one day he asked me if I wouldn't like a grand piano to compliment the tone of the choir....well, YES! He even had to make the doors bigger on the choir room so we could move it to the gym for concerts. (Anyone know if that piano is still there?) . The choir students were outstanding....hard workers, loyal, energetic, willing to put up with me...and what a sound! I still have the record we made(had it transferred to CD) and play it often....awesome....difficult music beautifully sung. Wow....just wow! In 1965, I decided I needed advanced degrees and left Midview to attend TSUN (the school up north - Michigan)to work on my Masters and PhD. I took a job in Flint, which was close enough to commute to Ann Arbor. I completed my degrees but by then we had started a family so we just stayed. Back then Flint was a booming Gene...Expand for more
ral Motors town....we got all the money we could spend in our school system....and, it was a good place for my two kids to come of age. (Sarah and Bryan) I taught for 41 years....retired in 2003. I had a church choir for 18 years, I conducted the Flint Symphony Chorus for 20 years with 4 concerts in Carnegie Hall, I had a small 32 voice professional choir for 5 years, I took my students on concert tours to England 12 times with our final concert in St. Martin-in-the-Fields, I had private voice students, did solo work and guest conducting....kept busy! My kids lived in Austin so when I retired my wife of 52 years said the family(4 granddaughters, too) are all in Austin....what are we doing here? We moved. Austin is great. We sing in the church choir, I got out my trumpet again and play in a community concert band... I think of Midview often. I took a trip back to Grafton right after I retired....fun to go down memory lane. Actually caught up to a few students still in the area. Good Luck and Best Wishes to my former students....you're the best!
